Child Summer Reading Program

Build a Better World!

Reading Guidelines:

Pick up your Summer Reading Log at the Youth Services Department any time between June 27, and August 7, 2017. 

  • You must read at least 2 hours per week and get your log checked to receive a prize.
  • You will get one treasure chest prize and one raffle ticket per weekly visit.
  • The last day to get your log checked is Friday, August 11, 2017. *
  • If you read at least 20 hours over the summer and get your reading log checked by August 11th, you will win a special prize!

Remember, you may only get your log checked once a week. Children of ALL ages can participate in the reading part of our program. Even the littlest patrons, our pre-readers, since parents or other family members can read to them. Remember, to sign up for any of the summer reading activities, you must also sign up for the reading part of the program.

*Since the last day to get your reading log checked is August 11, the last day to sign up for the reading program is August 7.

All events are free and open to the public and are handicapped accessible. 

Summer Reading Kick-off – Jungle Encounters – Predator and Prey
Monday, June 27 – 7 PM 

Learn about what it is like to be a prey animal and how to survive in the wild. You will also get to meet some of these amazing animals!

Start U Reading Event with Elmo!
Friday, June 30 – 10:30 AM

This activity is geared especially for preschoolers, ages 3+, where children will be able to participate in a special storytime, meet with Elmo, and learning about more exciting library activities. Pictures can be taken with Elmo. Parents will learn about the importance of reading at home and obtain information to help plan to save for college.

Hour of Code
Choice of Monday, July 10 OR Monday, July 24 – 10:00 AM

Join us for an hour of code at the branch at the Senior Center! Children in grades 2 through 4 will be introduced to basic computer coding with a tutorial featuring a popular game. Please be aware that this program will be an hour and a half session and children can only sign up for one session. Attention: This program will take place in the computer lab at the Pollard Library Senior Center branch at 276 Broadway St.

Summer Mother Goose on the Loose

Mother Goose on The Loose is a series of nursery rhyme programs for children from birth through age three. Big sisters and brothers are welcome too. Come to Mother Goose and give your brood a boost! We will have one session each day at 10:30AM.

Take a bite out of a good book at the library! Do you have a favorite book, series, or author? Children in grades 3-5 are invited to bring your favorite book with you to share and your appetite for a special lunch at the library. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Drop - In Craft

Children in grades Pre-K to grade 2 can stop by the meeting room on the ground floor for a fun drop-in craft.

Perler Bead Crafternoon 
Tuesday, August 1 – 2:00 – 3:30 PM 

Perler beads are back! Children in grades three through five are welcome to come and use their creativity to create a retro craft with Perler beads. Patterns that are available include characters from popular movies and games. Craft supplies will be provided.
