the Pollard Memorial Library
Detailed Program Information and Volunteer Opportunities
Literacy Volunteers of the Pollard Memorial Library offers free, confidential, private and flexibly scheduled tutoring to adults with little or no reading or writing skills, and those who wish to become more fluent English speakers, readers and writers. Our program was founded in 1982. We serve the Greater Lowell area and are affiliated with Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts and are accredited by ProLiteracy Worldwide. Our efforts are fully supported by the Pollard Memorial Library, and we receive funding assistance through state and federal grants and donations to our program.
Volunteer Tutors
Literacy Volunteers of the Pollard Memorial Library recruits, orients, trains, and supports volunteer tutors by:
- Holding program orientation sessions to provide more information about the PML-ALP
- Conducting free 18 hour Tutor Training workshops in Adult Basic English (ABE) and English of Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
- Providing space for tutor and students to meet at the library
- Maintaining a lending library of materials for tutors and students to use
- Offering continuing education opportunities at the library and at other adult education institutions
- Providing ongoing support through telephone contact, newsletters, workshops, trainings, support groups, and recognition evenings
Students
Our waiting list of adult learners who need volunteer tutors is long. Students are referred to us by agencies, teachers, friends, adult education programs, and word of mouth. Each student is unique, but as a group, they have a common goal: to increase their knowledge of the English language.
Literacy Volunteers of the Pollard Memorial Library recruits, interviews, assesses, and matches potential students with volunteer tutors. We support adult learners by:
- Providing free, confidential and individualized tutoring in ABE and ESOL
- Offering student-centered instruction
- Recognizing student achievements throught the year and at our annual Recognition Night
