Library Cards & Loan Rules

Am I eligible for a card? How do I get one?

Residents of Lowell

Residents of Lowell are eligible for a Pollard Memorial Library Card. Bring proof of name (preferably a Driver’s License or photo ID) and Lowell residency (utility bill, lease, etc.) to one of our circulation desks.

Adult Registration Form       Formulario de Registro de adultos

Children's Registration         Formulario de Registro de niños

Along with your card you get a password/PIN which you can use to access your account online through the MVLC catalog. You’ll also need it to reserve a library computer. When you log in to your account in the catalog it will prompt you to change this PIN to a 7 digit alpha-numeric password. We can set or re-set your password if you bring a photo ID to the 2nd floor Reference Desk.

Children/Students

Any child aged 13 and under who is a Massachusetts resident may get a card with a parent's or guardian's signature (parent or guardian must be present and have proof of address). The person signing the registration form will be held responsible for items on the child's card that are not lost or damaged.

Children 14 – 18 years old may get a library card with positive ID (such as a school schedule, driver's license, etc.) or a parent's signature (parent or guardian must be present and have proof of address) or pupil identification form signed and stamped by the school office. Children 13 years old and under should use the Children's form. Children 14-18 years old may use the Adult form with a school schedule. A letter will be sent to the parent/guardian of any student registering without a parent's signature notifying them that their child has registered for a library card.

Massachusetts State Law (G.L. c78:7) prohibits disclosure by a public library of a patron's identity or patron's borrowing history. The law does not differentiate among categories of library patrons and applies equally to records of minor patrons and those of adults.

By state law, public libraries may not disclose records which reveal a minor's borrowing information to the minor's parents, regardless of whether the parent is paying the fine on overdue items or the parent has signed the children's library cards.

Any child not yet in high school or the home school equivalent who is a Massachusetts resident may get a card with a parent's or guardian's signature. The person signing will be held responsible for items on the child's card that are lost or damaged. There is no age limit for getting a library card—children under the age of 7 (or up to 1st grade) can get a special "bunny" library card. When the child reaches age 7 or is in first grade, the parent can request a regular Pollard Memorial Library card free of charge.

Out of town residents

Residents of other towns in the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium (MVLC) should get a card at their home library and can use it here. Residents of Massachusetts towns not in the MVLC can also use the Pollard Library. Bring your hometown library card and an ID.

Out-of-state residents:

Employees of the City of Lowell, Lowell National Historic Park, Lowell Heritage State Park, UMass Lowell, and Middlesex Community College who live out-of-state qualify for free Lowell-use only cards. MVLC consortium-wide cards can also be purchased or renewed for $75.00 per year. Please provide a valid ID and proof of employment to one of our circulation desks. Out-of-state students from UMass Lowell or Middlesex Community College can get Lowell use only cards for $25.00 per year.

Lost/Stolen Cards

If you lose your card, please report it to us as soon as possible to avoid being held responsible for any items checked out to the card. Replacement cards are available for a $1.00 fee. Your card must be clear of any fines or outstanding items before you can re-register.

Library cards are not transferable and can only be used by the individual registered for that card. Home-bound patrons may write a letter requesting that a named friend/relative may use their card to borrow materials for them.

Rules of Loan

All users must have a library card in hand to check out materials at the Pollard Memorial Library.
Museum passes are available to Lowell residents with library cards and members of the Friends of the Pollard Library. Museum passes must be returned by 10:00 am the following day. A $5.00 per day fee will apply to passes that are returned late.
